Introduction to Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat
Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat is located 125m away from Kalmunai Town. It has 30 Grama Niladhari Divisions and 4 villages. It is bounded on East by Sea, on West by Navithanvelli and Sammanthurai Ds Division, on North by Kaluvanchikudi DS division and on South by Sainthamuaru Ds Division. It is consisting of 23.70 sqkm land. According to the census surveyed by GN in 2022. It has 63032 population and 15086 families. Out of 63032 population 49.4% are men and 50.6% are women. There are Muslims Hindus and Shihales. Out of these three communities, Muslims is the majority. Next to it are Hindus and Sinhales  respectively.

History of Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat
Considering density of population, steps were taken to establish a separate Ds Division with the view to providing better service the people in Kalmunai.  Accordingly it had been declared to operate as a fully DS Division on 1993.10.10.

Kalmunai Ds Division is well endowed natural resources. Agriculture, Fisheries, Hand loom and Cottage Industry and Trade contribute significantly to the development of local economy. It started with petty trade in the early history of the division and expanded little by little to large scale trading nowadays. Kalmunai DS Division has total coastal length of about 10km. It is best for coastal and deep sea fishing. In the early time, fishery activities took place using traditional Craft (Katumarang). Later Fishermen engaged little by little in modern fishing. According to census suveyed in 2022, There are 919 families who are related to fishing activities. Out of them 900 families are found active fishermen families. Out of them 797 families are engaged in marin fishing and 103 families are involved in inland fishing.

Many People living in Kalmunai engage in Business. The rest of them engage in Agriculture, Fishing and cattle rearing. The major part of Agriculture is paddy in which 587.17 hactare  are cultivated.
